The Story

Finally after 6 years, the stars were aligned and James proposed to Sylvia on April 15, 2005. The night started off (Thursday) with James asking Sylvia out for a late night dessert at Jer-ne. This is is definitely a little surprising since James very infrequently takes Sylvia on a date. They order an assortment of creme brulee and flourless chocolate and their favorite: cappuccino and chatted about many things.

The midnight snack ended perfectly around 11:30pm as James was eager to take Sylvia to the next stop for the night. During the walk home James asked Sylvia to head over to South Station for suspicious reasons and despite her protests he made her walk towards the bus terminal with him! At this point Sylvia definitely knows something is up. When they got to the south station, the long proposal process is finally started... Sensing that Sylvia knows what "might" happen now, James had to be persistent on remaining calm and neutral about the situation.

At 11:50pm, James took Sylvia directly to the waiting bench for in-bounding buses from New York City. After 15 minutes of small talk on the bench Sylvia is starting to get super antsy. "Why are we here?", "Are we going to be here all night?", "Let's go people are very creepy here...". James just said "wait...", "you need to wait for the special time". "What special time!" Sylvia thought out loud and finally went "Oh...., dang it. What time did my bus arrive from New York that night?"

The South Station bus terminal is where James and Sylvia met in person for the first time!

Engagement Ring

Tick Tock... Tick Tock... at 12:39 am James told Sylvia, let's go home now. In Sylvia's head, she thought "WHAT! What is this? This is it?"... It was a slow and suspenseful walk back towards where they lived. But as they were about to enter the building, James pulled another surprise by pulling Sylvia to go towards Christopher Columbus Park.

Now the anxiety is really building up... James walked Sylvia down the middle of the park and paused in a few places to further build up the moment and finally sat Sylvia down at a bench facing out to the Boston Harbor. They talked a bit more about how beautiful the night is and then at 1:10am James finally reached into his pocket and pulled out the ring and proposed.

James got down on one knee (but Sylvia does not remember this since she was sitting down!) and said "I know this has taken a while but for the past one and half years, I have been ready to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me babe?" As tears of happiness and shock stream down Sylvia's face, she said in a shaky voice "Yes... Please say it again!" *sigh*

Typical James style of doing things, a dark plan behind everything, hahaha...but it worked, so it was a good plan. I think I had a talk with him a few years ago about this, the question before was like "well, we've been together for so long already, what's next? It's either we break up or we go to the next stage in life". Glad you choose the latter one James, congratulations:)

From: sophie 2005-05-05 00:34:54
haha! Good job, Sylvia, for making him repeat it again! =D That's for dragging you around the shady areas of Boston in the middle of the night! (Although I guess that could be Sylvia's fault since she apparently decided to drag James out to meet her for the first time in the middle of the night...) I'm just teasing... =D What a wonderful engagement! I have to echo James' sis' sentiments. I too have been waiting for this engagement for YEARS! I am soooooooo thrilled that one of my dearest and most genuine childhood friends will be married (one day) to an incredibly wonderful and deserving guy. James and Sylvia, I wish you both tons of blessings and send you both a virtual long-distance, but heartfelt, hug. Congratulations again!
